The Stages of Gum Disease

Gum disease is incredibly common. At some point, almost everybody is going to develop at least a minor case of gum disease. It is estimated that 75% of Americans have gingivitis, the first form of gum disease. It is important to understand the progression of gum disease, so let us look now at the four stages. As gum disease is allowed to progress, it can become very serious, even leading to tooth loss.

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. Gingivitis is very treatable. Symptoms of gingivitis include red and/or inflamed gums, which can sometimes result in bleeding when you brush.

Early periodontitis is the second stage of gum disease. This stage of gum disease can result in a small loss of tooth-supporting bone. Your gums will continue to be red and/or inflamed, and your gums will bleed when you brush.

Moderate periodontitis is the third stage of gum disease. At this stage, the disease is really starting to cause some damage. More bone structure could be lost, along with gum tissue being destroyed. It is at this point that teeth could begin to loosen.

Advanced periodontitis is the most severe stage of gum disease. Symptoms at this point are severe. Teeth can become very loose at this point. Chewing could cause pain and discomfort. Extensive dental work may be necessary to try to correct gum disease at this stage.
